Why Trump chose Alaska to meet with Putin
Trump and Putin are meeting in Alaska next Friday. Trump will try to find a way to end the war in Ukraine during the summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. There is widespread speculation about why US President Donald Trump chose his far northern state of Alaska to meet with Putin, given the vast space available.
Interestingly, Alaska, covered in mountains and snow, was once part of Russia. In 1867, Russia sold the territory to the United States. The easternmost part of Russia is not far from the western edge of the state, only the Bering Strait separates it.
But Alaska was chosen as the venue for this important meeting between Trump and Putin not just to show respect for history; it is also a matter of political calculation. The outcome of this meeting may also indicate the shape of future relations between the United States and Russia.
