US President Donald Trump has announced that he is firing Lisa Cook, a member of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, over allegations of irregularities in mortgage lending.

The US central bank, the Federal Reserve, operates as an independent institution. Therefore, such a move by the president is unprecedented. If the matter goes to court, the limits of the president's power could be tested.

In a letter to Cook, Trump said there were sufficient grounds to fire him. The allegations are that Cook took out separate mortgages on two homes in Michigan and Georgia in 2021. In both cases, he listed the homes as his "principal residence" on paperwork.

Cook was appointed to the Fed board in 2022 by then-President Joe Biden. The issue has been in the news ever since William Pulte, director of the US Federal Housing Finance Agency, raised Cook's issue last week and referred it to Attorney General Pam Bondi for investigation.

Neither Cook nor Fed officials immediately responded to Reuters for comment.

Federal Reserve governors serve long terms that do not end with a president's term. Cook's term is set to run until 2038. However, under the law, a governor can be removed for serious reasons.
